A simple Bible explanation without church jargon.
What Is Sin?
You do not have to be familiar with church words to understand this. Sin is something that affects every one of us, and the Bible's message is not that you are uniquely bad. It is that every person needs the same Savior.
What Does the Bible Mean by “Sin”?
This page is not here to shame you. It is here to explain why every one of us needs grace. The Bible's message is not “you are worse than everyone else.” It is that all of us have sinned, all of us need forgiveness, and God has lovingly made a way back to Him through Jesus.
You may have heard Christians use the word sin and wondered what it actually means. It can sound like a harsh or frightening religious word, but before you stop reading, please understand something important: this is about every one of us. You are not being singled out or judged.
Sin means that we have fallen short of God's perfect standard. Sometimes sin seems very serious to us, and sometimes it may seem small.
Have you ever told a lie? Taken something that was not yours—even something as small as a piece of gum? Have you ever ordered water at a restaurant but filled your cup with Coke without paying for it?
Have you ever deliberately gone against what your parents told you to do? Have you ever allowed video games, television, football, sporting events, hobbies, money, or anything else to become more important in your life than God, going to church, or spending time reading the Bible?
Have you ever looked at another person with lust? Been jealous because someone had a new toy, car, house, job, relationship, or something else you wanted? Have you ever become so angry with someone that you said, “I hate you”?
These are everyday examples that help us understand what the Bible means by sin. None of us can point a finger at someone else and pretend we have never sinned.
Every one of us needs God's forgiveness. Sin separates us from a holy God. We cannot repair that separation simply by trying harder, doing enough good things, attending church, or becoming a “better person.”
This is why we need Jesus. God did not leave people without a way back to Him. Jesus Christ willingly took our place. He was without sin, yet He gave His life for us. He took the penalty we could not pay, died on the cross, and rose again. Through Jesus, God offers forgiveness, peace with God, and life with God forever as a gift.
The Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). A wage is something that is earned or owed. Sin has a real consequence: death. Revelation also describes the final judgment as “the second death” — the lake of fire. In other words, we cannot simply pay the price of sin ourselves and then return to God's presence. If we were left to pay that judgment ourselves, we could not rescue ourselves from it.
God the Father is perfectly holy. Sin cannot simply be carried into His holy presence as though it does not matter. The Bible says that nothing that defiles will enter God's eternal city and that God is of purer eyes than to approve evil. Our sin therefore creates a separation that we cannot repair by ourselves.
Why Does Sin Separate Us From God?
And the truth is that none of us sins only once. We are human. We make wrong choices, speak wrong words, think wrong thoughts, and put other things ahead of God. Every one of us needs mercy and forgiveness.
You do not have to break every one of the Ten Commandments to be separated from God and need His forgiveness. Even one sin in an entire lifetime is enough to show that we have fallen short of God's perfect standard. For example, if the only wrong thing you had ever done in your entire life was tell one lie, you would still need God's forgiveness. The Bible says that if a person keeps the whole law and yet offends in one point, that person is guilty before the law.
It Only Takes One Sin to Need Forgiveness
That Is Why We Need Jesus
God loves us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus lived the perfect life that we could not live. He never sinned. Yet He willingly went to the cross and took the punishment for our sin upon Himself. Jesus died in our place.
But the story did not end at the cross. Jesus rose from the dead. He conquered death.
